STAND (Students Training Arts and Design) Creative Design Class

The Creative Design Class has started for STAND students and is taught by our 2013 “Achiever of the Year,” Sade Solomon and Daphne Jules. It is a seven-week class module that focuses on terminology, design elements, and the creative design process. This Creative Design Class shines the spotlight on past and current fashion eras/trends, as well as fashion designers and houses. It teaches students to understand the creative process of inspiration documentation and design experimentation from selecting images for mood boards and color stories to sourcing fabrics and trims for collection development.

Fashion Merchandising

Fashion merchandising is a complex field that merges the art of fashion and business harmoniously. This seminar will explain in detail the complexity of both components, along with what it takes to be a successful fashion merchandiser and how to make sure merchandise is appealing, and accessible, to the customer.

Couture Women’s wear Design

This hands on course gives students an incredible opportunity to truly pursue their dreams as women’s wear designers. At the end of this seminar, students will design two looks; a couture evening gown, and a career appropriate look. Coupled with guidance from their instructor, students will sketch these looks and assemble the proper fabric swatches and thread colors to present to a panel of designers and industry professionals. The top three students will be selected as finalist for the grand prize; an all-expense paid, week-long trip to South Africa where they will be mentored by some of the top fashion houses, producers, and stylists. The winner will have the opportunity to attend Mercedes-Benz Joburg Fashion Week and they will also receive hands on training throughout the year. They will have the opportunity to be seen and recognized by industry professionals’ here in the US and they will also be given a grant of $1000 to help build their brand by creating their first collection which will be presented at UCOF’s 2014 Gala and Collective Show.

Fashion Globalization

With modern technology and a global market, the world seems a lot smaller than it once was. With globalization, the manufacturing, distribution and selling of goods and services is at our finger tips. This seminar emphasizes the direct and indirect impact of fashion globalization in our society, and will help to answer the question of how we can maximize the benefits of fashion globalization to suit our needs.

Introduction to Production and Backstage Management

This course teaches students the necessary steps in producing a fashion show. This course will go into depth on subjects like finding a theme and venue for the show along with the importance of understating the designer and the collection at hand when producing a show. Budgeting, the actual process of hiring the production team and inviting the media and VIP’s are also taught throughout this course. Public relation is an essential part of this course as well, and how to properly send press releases to local media, fashion publications and fashion bloggers is an integral part of this curriculum.
Students will also be given an assignment to envision and propose a world class fashion show production which includes conceptualizing a theme and the entire production of the show itself. The top three students will be selected as finalist for the grand prize; the opportunity to work under the guidance of Jan Malan to produce UCOF’s 2014 Gala and fashion show.

PR and Marketing

This course focuses on topics such as brand and message development, media and marketing strategies and reputation management. It also focuses on audience targeting, PR in the digital world, and the legal aspect of social media.
In this course, students will be assigned a project to come up with PR or marketing strategy to help bridge the gap between the general public and the UCOF brand. Students will be able to use different mediums and avenues that are relevant while still representing the culture of UCOF. The top three students who can conceptualize a plan will be the finalist for the grand prize; a one month internship at a reputable PR firm in NY and another month working with the UCOF marketing team. The student who wins this prize will be able to network and build a wealth of industry knowledge while gaining valuable firsthand experience in the PR industry. The winner will be working alongside UCOF’s PR and Marketing team where their plan will be utilized for next year’s Gala and collective show. They will also have the opportunity to work on smaller projects for UCOF throughout the year, giving them even further guided experience and notoriety. By the end of the year, the winning student will have built enough confidence and experience to face any challenges or obstacles that may come their way.

Modeling/Introduction to Casting

This course answers any and every question an aspiring model has when entering the industry. How to step your foot into the modeling industry, what to bring or wear to a casting, what the role of the agent is and many more important topics will be covered. This curriculum breaks down the “how to” on succeeding in the fast paced modeling industry and it also covers the integral role of the modeling agency itself.

Hair and Make-Up

Hair and makeup play an integral part in creating the aesthetic of a runway show. Understanding what to look for in hair and makeup for a collection can help take a designers vision to the next level, aiding in the overall atmosphere of the show.
The students in this course will visit a salon where they will be given hands on experience in learning tricks of the trade. Students will learn how to succeed in the beauty industry and how to stay on trend while establishing their own niche and identity.

Fine Tailored Menswear Design

This hands on course gives students an incredible opportunity to truly pursue their dreams as menswear designers. At the end of this seminar, students will design two looks; a tailored couture suit, and a sportswear ensemble. Coupled with guidance from their instructor, students will sketch these looks and assemble the proper fabric swatches and thread colors to present to a panel of designers and industry professionals. The top three students will be selected as finalist for the grand prize; an all-expense paid, week-long trip to South Africa where they will be mentored by some of the top fashion houses, producers, and stylists.
