While shopping for a Mother’s Day present a few weeks ago I stumbled upon some brightly colored bracelets at the register. They were Chavez for Charity bracelets. Just by glancing over the display I was able to get from it that 25% of profits from the sale of these bracelets goes to a charity. Each different colored bracelet stands in support of a different charity. I took a picture of the display and told myself that I was going to contact them and feature them on United Colors of Fashion Icon of the Week. Their responses were quick and the interview went very well.
Julie Marie Chavez started her jewelry line, mariechavez, over 14 years ago. Noticing the positive response she received from the line, she decided to make a bigger impact on the world by starting a jewelry line that gives back, and Chavez for Charity was born. Within the first year she was able to raise a little over $165,000. During the interview I asked Julie, “Who is your next charitable target?” Julie stated that she’d be helping children next. She is coming out with a line exactly like Chavez for Charity, but it will be catered more towards children. This line will help children become better acquainted with the nonprofit world. Julie wants to get and keep the children involved by teaching them about charities through her jewelry line. At the affordable price of ten dollars for a single bracelet, I think that it is only a matter of time before everyone is wearing them. Bracelets are not the only thing Julie does either. Her line also has necklaces that support the same ten charities. If you aren’t one to online shop you can find Chavez for Charity in your local Whole Foods or Giftology stores. You can also go to their website to find other stores by using their store locator! In my opinion, Julie and her team will be the next big thing that is here to stay. With her plans to go international she is taking all the right steps.
