How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style is ever-changing, but can be described as versatile & transitional. I like to find pieces that serve more than one purpose, i.e. day to night, and can be easily styled into more than one standard outfit.

How would you describe your personal style?
I really like to keep it simple and comfortable. “Less is more” will forever be my motto; I never like to look too ‘done up’. Bed head, ‘no makeup-makeup’, boyfriend jeans and a crisp white tee—these are all essential to my personal style. If I had to sum my style up in 3 words: resourceful, minimalistic and comfortable.

UMANO Phone Interview: “Rock a Pocket. Empower a Kid.”

In Icons / August 16, 2014 / 0 Comments

By: Venita Aspen

How did you come up with the idea?
We’re a brother duo, and we knew our social mission from the jump. Our parents were both teachers and it was a given that we would focus on education. The concept came from the desire to want to do something. We believe that one does not have to choose between doing well and doing good. We don’t have a background in fashion but were inspired by game changing moments while learning about social entrepreneurship.

How do you choose each Pocket Artist?
Virtue cycles start and end with a Giving Trip and we collect drawings. We come back with 800 or more drawings, and start looking at each and every one. We find the drawings that will do the best as PocketArt and then go to work, but one rule protects the drawing- we don’t add or take anything away from the drawing.

UCOF honors Bruce Reynolds in the name of fashion philanthropy.

NEW YORK – The foundations of United Colors of Fashion (UCOF) have the ethos of giving embedded in them. The UCOF vision has always been reflective of the concept of paying it forward, and it is that vision that has assisted over 350 youth in the tri-state area since 2010. The work that UCOF does through its free fashion education Student Training Arts And Design (STAND) program, gives aspiring fashion professionals the exposure to and training in fashion they would not be able to get starting out in the industry.

Speaking of giving, Bruce Reynolds, a friend of UCOF, celebrated his birthday this week in New York and our President Ciano Clerjuste attended. Bruce has been a trusted advisor to the organization on many topics from business to fashion – which is ultimately his forté. Bruce was the correspondent for ABC’s “On The Red Carpet” where he has interviewed nearly every Hollywood celebrity and he often serves on fashion panels assessing the latest fashion and trends.

Summer 2014 Trend: Kimonos

In Trends / July 30, 2014 / 0 Comments

By: Gabriela Herstik

Happy summer everyone! As we change over into the season of heat, there is no reason for the fashionable people of the world to stop layering. Let’s be honest – layers instantly make you look like you know how to put together an outfit, and the best light layer for the summer is a kimono. The kimono has slowly transitioned its way into the fashion world and I could not be happier. A staple that should be in every fashion conscious woman’s closet, this light layer piece gives an ensemble a laid-back, bohemian vibe. Throw one on over your bathing suit or rock one with a pair of denim shorts. It’s versatile enough to wear both ways. During the summer, we need pieces that can easily be worn on the beach and then look just as trendy when we go out to eat with friends, not to mention that it should be a core part of your summer music festival wardrobe. Inspired by the beautiful fabrics and silhouettes of Japan, these garments make any look effortlessly stylish.

UCOF President Partners to Help Haiti

NEW YORK, NY – July 23rd, 2014 – Three weeks ago the President and Chairman of United Colors of Fashion (UCOF), Ciano Clerjuste, joined a group of 100 people from NOAH NY on a special medical mission in Haiti. With Haiti still picking up the pieces of the devastating 2010 earthquake, NOAH NY took doctors and nurses from various US hospitals, non-medical volunteers and medical students from Howard University, to Fort-Liberte Hospital to provide assistance to those in need. This is the sixth trip the organization has made to Haiti.

“Six years ago NOAH NY decided to focus its medical mission on Haiti’s Northeastern Town of Fort Liberte. More than 25,000 patient visits and 400 surgeries later, we now have a better sense of the needs in Fort Liberte and its surrounding towns. It continues to be apparent that quality healthcare and health education is badly needed. However, there is one caveat, it has to be provided throughout the year and we must have our own facility. We will achieve this goal in 2015,” said Dr. Henry Paul, President of NOAHNY

Icon of the Week: Diane Von Furstenberg

In Icons / July 25, 2014 / 0 Comments

By: Gabriela Herstik

Diane Van Furstenberg has been a tidal wave of power in the fashion world since 1972. Diane has always believed in the human spirit and the innate ability that women have to change the world. With nothing but a suitcase full of jersey dresses, Diane was able to spark a revolution in the modern day women’s fashion by creating the wrap dress, and by giving women everywhere the ability and opportunity to dress for themselves.

Diane has been dubbed “the most marketable woman since Coco Chanel,” and for good reason; even after her hiatus from the fashion world ended in 1997, she was able to re-establish her company and create a world renown and iconic fashion house. Today, Diane serves as the president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and is also a philanthropist.

Icon of the Week: Charity for Chavez

In Icons / July 25, 2014 / 0 Comments

By: Venita Aspen

While shopping for a Mother’s Day present a few weeks ago I stumbled upon some brightly colored bracelets at the register. They were Chavez for Charity bracelets. Just by glancing over the display I was able to get from it that 25% of profits from the sale of these bracelets goes to a charity. Each different colored bracelet stands in support of a different charity. I took a picture of the display and told myself that I was going to contact them and feature them on United Colors of Fashion Icon of the Week. Their responses were quick and the interview went very well.

Ombrè: How would you describe your personal style?
I have many different styles. Most of all, I like sporty, feminine and casual clothing. My look depends on the season. In the summer I like to wear colorful pieces paired with high heels, and during the winter I like to wear dark jeans with high boots. In terms of jewelry, I prefer gold. Almost all my jewelry is very subtle. I think subtleness is very feminine. Furthermore, I love skinny jeans, however I also like to wear nice dresses. I buy clothes that make me feel good and do not necessarily follow the fashion trends.
